antique art with a twist

hi y'all, it's good to see you!
Yay, I have something to show, something I've had much fun with; it's  3 'old painted' portraits, but not just any kind.

because a few weeks ago when I couldn't yet do the kind of thing needed for some other things I had been making, I was thinking of antique paintings that I want for my Oldtique-Store-to-be and that it would be nice to add something to that. That led to the idea to give that antique art a personal touch and that's how I got to making: 'paintings' of nobly ladies with my own face in them! Well, it doesn't get any more personal than that I guess :D . I found some nice ones online that I modified with my face and it's printed on my beloved cotton twill fabricsheets, I just love that stuff!

you can't see it well or at all, but I've 'varnished' them with mod podge and adding layers in which I tried to add a bit of the brushstrokes
because my boyfriend liked them so much and wanted one of himself of course I made one with his face too. I think he looks very handsome in that uniform. One of my brothers and his wife liked these pieces of 'art' so much too, they suggested I make them of the whole family. Which I think is a great idea and I certainly intend to do in time!

the label on the right is for reference, so it's always clear what the real painting is or who it's from and who's face is in it! :D
the one on the right isn't finished as it's missing in the finished pictures. The real one has - and I'd like it with - an oval frame and I decided it took long enough for me to make the other three. Besides an oval frame is a bit more difficult (although I have a simpler idea for that), I'll leave it at that for now

below are the paintings in their normal state, as they were made by the painters for their clients. I wonder what they'd say if they could see what I've done to them ;)

  1. That is just unbelievable! I love them. You have great ideas. PLUS you are able to realize them. I am clueless with computers.

    1. Thanks Catherine, for your compliments! I'm fortunate to have liked computers and needed things through the years that required learning along the way. You don't want to know how I started :D

  2. Brilliant!
I love your twist on old paintings. And your mounting and framing is great too.

    1. Thank you Simon, great to hear! Well, the framing (especially the one of 'me' in the blue) is not the best really, but it's all I had and it works.

  4. What a wonderful idea and I am sure all your family would enjoy their face superimposed on a famous portrait. You will be busy finding the painting that expresses the personality of the recipient. What fun to see them opening their gifts.

  7. How clever, Monique! Mulvany and Rogers did something like that for a grand dolls' house - they reproduced two very famous period paintings, but made the lady and gentleman in the paintings resemble the clients who'd commissioned the house.

I am hopeless at painting and don't know how to use Photoshop, but I'm planning to slip some old (1930s-1960s) family photos into the bungalow :)

    1. Hi Anna, thank you! Ah Mulvany and Rogers, they're great! That's a great idea too, to put the faces of the owners of the dollshouse in paintings, I like that! It's a shame you can't do it yourself, but copy's of familyphoto's are great too, it makes it so personal doesn't it?

  8. Ha ha! I...LOVE...IT! I really love the back of the frames too. You look much happier to have your portrait painted than Miss De Bionville :D You're boyfriend looks rather like the original sitter too, it's quite hard to tell them apart :D

I have a lovely old photo of my Great Aunt, I am so going to stick my face over her face now :D

    1. Thanks Sarah! Haha, yes, well I guess Miss De Bionville was getting a little bored sitting for hours on end and unfortunately the painter got to her face at the end (or maybe she had to get up very early or had a bad hairday or whatever for the portrait and is why she doesn't look very happy, haha).

That's a great idea, you do that! I would love to see, will you post it?

    1. Thanks 'granny' ;) Ha, that's because the picture of him was facing the other way and he looks funny if I mirror it, but I like your explanation, let's keep it the reason!

  12. Oh, these are lovely! And so clever to use the faces of your family :) I love that they are so well done even in the back! They really do look like real paintings! Please, please make more :D You should sell these with the option of putting people's faces in..... they'd be a hit! :)

    1. Thank you so much Jana, and it's a great idea, the problem is it was (and I have an extended database of pictures of me and my boyfriend to choose from) very hard to find a picture with our faces at the right angle and a portrait that fits too, but it might definately be a hit ;D
